Surprisingly! The dilemma of English teachers associated with English language teaching is grave in the Indian land. English teachers in many schools in India are not up to the mark and lacks the desired English language teaching skills. Notably, the recent incident of the suspension of the two Rajasthan Government teachers for spelling mistakes in the English question paper brought this severe situation in the light. In fact, it has further given rise to several questions in the mind of the people who consider these instructors as ideal mentors.
The students lack of proficiency in the language may appear shocking to many of us. Though, the fact is that it is the plight not only of the students in rural India but in Urban India also. It is an irony that 60 out of 100 students in India who have scored above 80% in 10th and 12th board examinations are not competent enough to write even a paragraph in English. The main reason behind this pathetic scenario is the lack of the understanding of the language among the teachers who share wrong information further to their pupil. The incompetence of the teachers is well-reflected among the students perceptive for the dialect. They deliver flawed language and Grammar basics among them. Thus, it creates false judgment of grammar among the students and makes them grow up with the incomplete and inaccurate knowledge of the subject. Thereupon, resulting in the making of an inefficient English teachers of the future, and the chain goes on.
The three factors that add to the ineffective teaching practice in the Indian educational institutions are:
- Inadequate knowledge of spellings, phonetics, and grammar among the teachers
- Inefficient teachers
- Inept test practices
- Negligence towards the right teaching methods
Now the real question that arises is, “Do we need to educate English teachers in English?”
By carefully referring to the present scenario, the only answer that is striking my mind is a “YES.”
As the need for good English teachers will always be there, it becomes essential to aim for hiring mentors who are well-versed with the dialect. But, due to the shortage of well-educated teachers, authorities hire teachers who are not well-aware of the intricacies of the language. Hence, it is imperative to educate English teachers in English for boosting their knowledge of the language. It will help them to update themselves regularly and get to learn from the mistakes that they often make.
Only when the teachers learn English language and grammar well, they will be able to deliver appropriate information to the students, and will also be able to shape them as better and more confident human beings.
English is a language that is recognised throughout the world. Thus, it is evident to focus on the authenticity of the verse and transfer adequate information to the candidates so that they can face the world with extended confidence.
